Description
Ayre Cone Knife
The Ayre cone knife performs cone biopsy, or conization, of the cervix. It measures 23 cm and carries a 6.3 mm size.
What conization involves
Cone biopsy removes a cone of tissue around the cervical canal. Then the lab checks the margins and the full specimen. So the procedure can both diagnose and treat some lesions.
The 23 cm length
This length reaches the cervix through a speculum while the surgeon keeps steady control. Plus, the surgeon’s fingers remain back from the cervix. That way, the surgeon keeps a clear view of the cut.
Where it fits today
Many units now perform loop or laser excision for conization. However, a cold knife cone still has a place in some cases. Also, many surgeons keep a cold knife option on hand for cases where they prefer it.
Keeping the edge ready
A cone knife only works well with a keen edge that cuts without dragging tissue. Therefore, inspect the Ayre cone knife before each case. If the edge looks dull, set it aside for service.
Reprocessing Ayre cone knife
Clean the blade by wiping away from the edge, never toward your fingers. Next, rinse, dry and check for nicks under magnification. Store the knife in a guarded slot so the edge touches nothing.
