AO Tap

The AO bone tap cuts a thread in bone before a non-self-tapping screw goes in. Six diameters match common screw sizes.

Why tap first

Some screws do not cut their own thread. Therefore the surgeon drills a pilot hole, then taps it. As a result, the screw goes in smoothly and holds well.

Six diameters

Choose 1.5, 2.0, 2.7, 3.5, 4.5 or 6.5 mm. Small taps suit hand and foot screws. Meanwhile, the 4.5 and 6.5 mm taps suit large fragment and cancellous screws.

Who uses an AO bone tap

Trauma and orthopedic surgeons use it in plate and screw fixation. It also suits maxillofacial work with small screws. Scrub staff keep taps with the drill bits.

Using a tap sleeve

A tap sleeve protects soft tissue while tapping. Consequently, tendons and vessels stay clear. Use one whenever the approach is tight.

Matching sizes

Match the tap to the screw diameter, not the drill. For example, a 3.5 mm screw needs the 3.5 mm tap. Check your screw system to be sure.

Tap care

Clean the flutes with a stiff brush to remove bone. Dry fully. Inspect the cutting threads for damage before reuse.
