Description
AO Drill Bit
The AO drill bit drills pilot holes in bone for screws and wires. Eight diameters cover mini fragment screws through large fragment work.
Diameter and length pairs
Each bit is listed with two lengths, total and working. For example, the 3.5 mm bit reads 110 / 85 mm. So you can check both the overall size and how deep the cutting part reaches.
The full range
Sizes run 1.1 mm (60 / 35), 1.5 mm (85 / 60), 2.0 mm (100 / 75) and 2.7 mm (100 / 75). Next come 3.2 mm (145 / 120), 3.5 mm (110 / 85), 4.5 mm (145 / 120) and 6.0 mm (195 / 170). Therefore one listing covers most plating systems.
Who uses an AO drill bit
Trauma and orthopedic surgeons drill screw holes with it during fixation. In addition, hand and maxillofacial surgeons use the small diameters. Scrub staff keep bits with their matching guides.
Choosing the right bit
Match the bit to the screw core diameter, not the thread. For instance, a 3.5 mm cortex screw usually takes a 2.5 mm pilot hole. Always check your screw system’s chart.
Drilling well
Use a drill guide to protect soft tissue and keep the bit straight. Then drill at a steady speed with light pressure. Irrigation reduces heat in dense bone.
AO drill bit sizes (total / working length)
- 1.1 mm, 60 / 35 mm; 1.5 mm, 85 / 60 mm
- 2.0 mm and 2.7 mm, both 100 / 75 mm
- 3.2 mm, 145 / 120 mm; 3.5 mm, 110 / 85 mm
- 4.5 mm, 145 / 120 mm; 6.0 mm, 195 / 170 mm
Bit care
Brush bone debris out of the flutes straight after use. Dry the bits and store them in a labeled rack by size. Replace bits that look dull or bent, since they overheat bone.
When you order
Surgeons get three years against manufacturing defects for this drill bit with every order. Our Atlanta inspector reviews each drill bit in person before it ships. A second drill bit on standby covers reprocessing gaps. It pairs well with our neutral drill guide. We also quote multiples for your team. For details on surgical alloys, open ASTM F899. Further pieces live in our orthopedic range. For shipping questions, see our order FAQ.
Sold for professional use. Refunds live on the returns page. The cleaning guide sets out differences in pictures together with the nickel in stainless steel.
