Description
Kerrison Intervertebral Disc Rongeur
The Kerrison disc rongeur is a punch-style rongeur that bites away bone and ligament in the spine. Surgeons use it to trim the lamina, open the foramen and remove ligamentum flavum during decompression.
How a Kerrison works
A Kerrison has a footplate at the tip and a cutting edge that slides toward it. So the surgeon slips the footplate under the bone edge, then squeezes the handle to take a bite. Because the footplate sits between the bone and the dura, it helps protect the dura below.
36 combinations
We offer three lengths: 15, 18 or 20 cm. Next, pick a bite of 1, 2, 3 or 5 mm. Finally, choose the angle: Upward, Downward or 40-degree Upward. Together those choices give 36 versions of the Kerrison disc rongeur.
Matching bite and angle to the case
Small bites suit the cervical spine and tight foramina. In contrast, the 5 mm bite removes lumbar bone quickly. The angle decides how the cutting edge meets the bone. For example, an upward bite suits the underside of a lamina, while a 40-degree upward bite helps reach around a curve.
Building a Kerrison set
Most spine trays carry several bite sizes in one angle, often with a second angle for difficult spots. Therefore, start with the sizes your surgeons request most. Then add lengths for deeper patients. We can suggest a starter set on request.
Caring for your Kerrison disc rongeur
Bone fragments collect inside the sliding shaft. So flush and brush the channel straight after surgery. Also, work the handle under running water to clear debris. Then dry it, lubricate the moving parts, and sterilize it.

Ordering your rongeurs
Whichever of the 36 versions you pick, a three-year warranty protects it if workmanship proves faulty. Before each shipment, we test the action and look over the jaws by hand in Atlanta. The FAQ collection covers bulk orders and payment. We treat ASTM F899 as the yardstick when customers ask about rongeur steel. For a longer shaft pattern, see the Kerrison-Colclough rongeur.
