Description
Kerrison-Colclough Intervertebral Disc Rongeur
The Kerrison-Colclough rongeur belongs to the Kerrison family of spinal punches. So surgeons rely on it to bite lamina, ligament and foraminal bone, especially in deeper wounds.
The Kerrison principle
Like other Kerrison patterns, this rongeur cuts with a sliding edge against a footplate. First, the footplate slips under the bone. Then the surgeon squeezes, and the edge takes a clean bite. Meanwhile, that footplate shields the dura underneath.
48 shaft, bite and angle options
We list four shaft lengths: 15, 18, 20 or 30 cm. Bite sizes run 2, 3, 4 or 5 mm. Also, you can pick Upward, Downward or 40-degree Upward cutting. As a result, the Kerrison-Colclough rongeur comes in 48 combinations.
When the long shaft helps
The 30 cm shaft reaches deep lumbar exposures and larger patients. In contrast, the 15 and 18 cm shafts give fine control in shallower wounds. For instance, a surgeon might use a 3 mm upward bite at 18 cm for a foraminotomy and a 5 mm bite at 30 cm for a deep laminectomy.
Deciding what to stock
Start with the lengths that match your patient population. Next, choose two or three bite sizes you use most. Then add a second angle for awkward spots. We are happy to review your current tray and suggest additions.
Caring for your Kerrison-Colclough rongeur
Clear bone debris from the shaft channel as soon as possible. Then brush, flush and cycle the handle to move trapped fragments. Afterward, dry it thoroughly, oil the working parts, and sterilize it.
