Description
Alexander Chisel
The Alexander chisel is a single-bevel bone chisel in a handy mid length. It trims, levels and squares bone where a flat result matters.
What sets it apart
The blade keeps a straight, even profile from shank to edge. As a result, it tracks true when driven with a mallet. The flat back also rides on the surface you want to keep.
Six widths
You can choose 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14 mm. Narrow blades cut notches and slots. Broad ones, by contrast, take down a raised area quickly.
Uses for the Alexander chisel
Orthopedic and hand surgeons use it to trim bone ends and prepare graft beds. It also smooths a cut surface after an osteotomy. Many trays keep it beside the Alexander gouge.
Angle and depth
Hold the bevel toward the bone you want to remove. Then keep the shank nearly flat for a thin shaving. If you raise the angle, the chisel bites deeper, so adjust slowly while you watch the edge.
Alexander chisel widths
- 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 mm
- Single bevel with a flat back
- Mallet-driven bone chisel
- Arrives non-sterile
Keeping the bevel sharp
Clean the blade soon after use, then dry it with care. Inspect the corners, since they chip first. Send a dull blade for honing before it skids on bone.
