Alexander Gouge
The Alexander gouge has a curved, hollow blade that scoops bone cleanly. It pairs with the Alexander chisel of the same length to cover shaping and leveling.
The value of a hollow blade
A gouge cuts a rounded groove, so it can open a canal or clean a cavity. Also, it lifts graft in curls that pack well. A flat chisel cannot do either job as neatly.
Width range
The range runs 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 mm. Small widths fit a narrow channel. Then the larger sizes widen the space in fewer passes.
When to choose the Alexander gouge
Pick it when the bone needs scooping rather than slicing. For example, it clears a cyst cavity or shapes a socket for graft. Afterward, the chisel can square the edges.
Low angle, thin curls
Tilt the gouge only slightly so it peels a fine ribbon of bone. However, raise it slightly when you need a deeper groove. Clear each chip before the next stroke so the view stays open.
Alexander gouge sizes
- Six widths: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 mm
- Hollow, curved blade
- Use by hand or with a light mallet
- Ships non-sterile
Cleaning a gouge
Brush out the hollow before debris dries. Next, rinse and dry the blade. Keep the edges apart in storage so they stay keen.
