Description
Ziegler Eye Speculum
The ziegler eye speculum is a compact 7cm frame. It spreads the lids and keeps them back, so you see the globe clearly. Because it is small, it can help on narrow lids or when space near the eye is tight.
Where a 7cm Ziegler makes sense
A shorter frame takes up less room around the eye. So it can suit smaller adults, older children and cases with a tight lid opening. It also leaves a bit more space for your hands and tools. For larger adult eyes, though, an 8cm frame may open wider.
Ziegler compared with larger specula
Larger specula give more spread but more bulk. By contrast, the Ziegler trades a little span for a lighter feel. Many clinics keep one 7cm and one 8cm frame on the shelf. Then the team can pick on the day, once they see the patient.
Quick facts on the Ziegler
- One size: 7cm
- Lighter, smaller footprint near the eye
- Steady hold on both lids
- Reusable once cleaned and sterilized
Caring for a compact speculum
Small frames are easy to lose in a tray, so give the Ziegler its own spot. After use, rinse, wash and dry it. Also check that the blades still line up and that the frame springs back when you squeeze it. If it feels weak, set it aside for review. It ships non-sterile, so run a full cycle before the first patient.
