Description
Wise Retractor
The Wise retractor holds skin flaps open in breast reduction and body contouring. At 16.5 cm, it reaches under a raised flap while the assistant’s hand stays well clear of the field.
Length of the Wise retractor
Sixteen and a half centimetres gives a comfortable reach under breast and abdominal flaps. Meanwhile, the handle offers a firm grip during long dissections.
Named for a classic pattern
The Wise pattern is one of the best-known skin markings in breast reduction. Fittingly, this retractor often appears on the same trays that surgeons use for that operation.
Holding a flap
Slide the blade under the flap edge and lift toward the ceiling. Then hold steady while the surgeon thins or frees the tissue below, easing off now and then to protect the skin.
Typical procedures
Breast reduction, mastopexy and abdominoplasty all call for flap retraction. In addition, it helps in scar revision and other body contouring work.
Pairing
Skin hooks hold the flap corners, whereas the Wise retractor supports the middle. Together, they open a broad, even window.
Hand position
Keep the wrist low and the elbow relaxed. As a result, the assistant can hold traction for long periods without tiring.
