West Chisel

The West chisel gives septal surgeons a short, straight blade for flat cuts. Under light mallet blows, it divides bone and cartilage near the front of the nose.

Flat cuts with a single bevel

A chisel carries its bevel on one side only. Therefore it tends to lift a flat layer of bone as it advances. So it proves handy for trimming and levelling.

One compact size

First, the size: we stock it at 15 cm, straight. That compact length gives fine control close to the nostril. Since our listing omits the blade width, we can measure it on request.

Uses during septoplasty

For instance, the surgeon may need to separate cartilage from bone at the base of the septum. A chisel can make that division cleanly. Then elevators and forceps complete the step.

Building a matched pair

If you like flat and rounded cuts, pair this chisel with a gouge. The West gouge shares its length and shape. As a result, the two feel alike in the hand.

Caring for your West chisel

Rinse the edge right after surgery, then wash it by hand. Dry it fully before it goes to the sterilizer. Also keep a guard on the edge during storage.
