Description
Wertheim-Cullen Vaginal Forceps
Wertheim-Cullen forceps are a vaginal and pedicle clamp for gynecologic surgery. The site lists them at 20 cm, and they measure about 21.5 cm.
Holding pedicles
During hysterectomy, the clamp secures a pedicle before the surgeon ties it. So the tissue stays under control while the suture passes around it and the knot goes down. Also, it helps steady tissue in other vaginal steps before the surgeon cuts.
Vaginal access
The length suits work through the vagina, where reach matters more than bulk. Therefore the clamp fits beside a speculum or retractor. However, deeper abdominal steps may call for a longer clamp.
A note on length
The listed 20 cm refers to the size label on our site. However, the clamp measures closer to 21.5 cm from tip to end. So check that figure against your tray layout.
Pairing with other clamps
Most vaginal hysterectomy sets combine several clamp patterns. Then the Wertheim-Cullen forceps can sit beside Heaney or Phaneuf clamps. Also, order in pairs so each side of the pelvis has a matching clamp ready.
Looking after Wertheim-Cullen forceps
Rinse the clamp at point of use to keep blood from drying. Next, clean it in a washer-disinfector with the jaws open. Finally, check alignment by closing it gently and holding it up to the light.
