Description
Wells Spoon
The Wells spoon is a classic ophthalmic spoon offered in Small and Large sizes. It is a simple, smooth tool for lifting and supporting tissue. Most teams list it with enucleation and orbital sets, where a broad, gentle surface helps.
Small or Large: picking a bowl
Pick the size by the space you work in. For tighter openings and smaller patients, the Small spoon suits best. The Large one, by contrast, offers more surface when you need to cradle or lift a bigger mass. Many trays carry both.
How a smooth bowl behaves
A spoon spreads force over a wide area. As a result, it can lift or hold tissue without cutting it. Also, the curve lets you slide it under a structure, then raise it in one calm motion.
Points to check when it arrives
When the spoon reaches your clinic, check these points:
- A bowl edge that feels smooth all the way round
- Straight handle with no bend
- Size matches the one you chose
- No pits or marks on the finish
Where it fits in an orbital set
In enucleation and orbital cases, smooth tools protect tissue you plan to keep. So this spoon sits beside scissors, retractors and clamps, ready to lift or cradle. Check the photo for the bowl form before you order.
Cleaning a broad Wells bowl
Wide bowls trap fluid on the inner face. So rinse the spoon soon after use, then scrub both faces with a soft brush. Dry it fully before you pack it, since water spots can dull the finish over time.
Order and care for the Wells
Small and Large Wells bowls both travel unsterile; wash, then sterilize the bowl in your usual cycle, and the Wells spoon can return to the orbital tray for many cases. Wells steel meets ASTM F899 for surgical stainless, and the bowl follows our own drawing. We cover the Wells for three years against manufacturing defects.
