Wagner Periosteal Raspatories

The Wagner periosteal raspatory is a long instrument for stripping periosteum in deep exposures. Its length keeps the hand well clear of the wound.

Long reach

A long shaft lets the blade reach bone that sits deep under muscle. So the surgeon can work around the hip or femur without crowding the field. Also, the extra length gives leverage for firm strokes.

Two widths

Choose an 8 mm or 17 mm blade. Furthermore, the 8 mm blade enters tight gaps and works around edges. By contrast, the 17 mm blade clears broad surfaces with fewer passes.

Hip, femur and pelvic surgeons use it in deep approaches. It also suits revision cases, where scar tissue clings to bone. Trauma teams use it during plate fixation.

Working safely

Keep the edge on bone at all times. Then push in short, controlled strokes. If the blade slips, stop and reposition rather than forcing it.

Cleaning a long raspatory

Brush the blade and the full shaft after use. Next, rinse and dry everything. Check the edge for nicks under good light.
