Description

Tubinger Gall Stone Forceps

The Tubinger gall stone forceps grasp and remove stones from the bile duct. Cupped jaws close around a stone, and the 26 cm length reaches deep into the duct.

Length of the Tubinger gall stone forceps

At 26 cm, they are among the longer stone forceps. Therefore, they reach stones near the lower end of the common duct. Meanwhile, the ring handles stay well outside the wound.

Cupped jaws

The jaws form a small cup when closed. As a result, they hold round stones without crushing them into fragments. Smooth edges also protect the duct lining.

Typical procedures

General and biliary surgeons use them in common bile duct exploration. For example, they lift out a stone the surgeon can see through the duct opening. They also retrieve stones from the cut end of the cystic duct.

Technique

Open the jaws just enough to pass around the stone. Next, close gently and feel for a secure hold. Then withdraw slowly along the line of the duct.

Choosing among stone forceps

Different patterns vary in length and curve. For instance, Tubinger forceps reach deep, while shorter patterns suit stones near the opening. Many trays carry two or three types.
