Laborde Trachea Dilator

The Laborde trachea dilator is a three-prong dilator for tracheostomy. Surgeons place the prongs in the tracheal opening and spread them to hold it wide.

Three blunt prongs

Three prongs open in different directions when the handle closes. So the tracheal opening widens more evenly than with two blades. The blunt ends also sit against the tracheal edge without cutting.

A 15 cm instrument

We stock this dilator at 15 cm. That length gives a steady grip while the prongs sit in the neck. If you need prong dimensions, ask us and we will check them for you.

Using it in tracheostomy

After the surgeon opens the trachea, the prongs go into the incision. Then the dilator holds the opening while the tube goes in. Finally, the surgeon withdraws the dilator once the tube sits in place.

Two or three prongs

Choose this pattern if you want a wider, more even spread. However, if you prefer a two-blade view, the Trousseau dilator may suit you better. Many departments stock both.

Caring for your Laborde trachea dilator

Clean between the prongs carefully, since tissue can collect there. Also flush the joint with running water while you work it open and shut. Dry every part, then sterilize.
