Trousseau Trachea Dilator

The Trousseau trachea dilator is a two-blade dilator for tracheostomy. Surgeons insert its blades into the tracheal opening and spread them to make room for the tube.

How the dilator works

Squeezing the handles opens the two blades apart. As a result, the edges of the tracheal incision separate. The surgeon can then pass the tracheostomy tube between them.

Size

A standard tracheostomy tool

This pattern is one of the best-known tracheal dilators, and many ENT trays include one. It also appears in emergency tracheostomy kits. Meanwhile, the Laborde dilator offers a three-prong alternative.

Choosing a dilator

Some surgeons prefer two blades because they give a clear view between them. Others like the wider spread of three prongs. If your team is unsure, try one of each and then standardize.

Caring for your Trousseau trachea dilator

Open the blades fully while cleaning so the joint gets a thorough rinse. Then brush the inner faces of the blades. Dry the dilator completely before it goes into the sterilizer.
