Description
Seutin Plaster Of Paris Shears
Seutin plaster shears are a classic, 23 cm cast shear. The lower blade slides under the cast while the upper blade cuts through the plaster.
The Seutin design
Louis Seutin was a Belgian surgeon known for early work on starched bandages and casts. Furthermore, the shears that carry the name are a long-standing cast room tool. Many staff still prefer them.
How Seutin plaster shears cut
The lower blade is flat and blunt so it can glide over the padding. Meanwhile, the upper blade cuts down through the plaster. As a result, the skin stays protected.
Who uses Seutin plaster shears
Cast technicians remove and trim casts with them every day. Also, orthopedic nurses use them on the ward. Fracture clinics keep a pair ready.
Technique
Work the lower blade forward under the cast in small steps. Then close the shears firmly to cut. Repeat along the planned line.
Size and leverage
At 23 cm, the shears give good leverage for arm and leg casts. However, very thick casts may need a heavier shear. Choose by your usual cast type.
Comfort for patients
A smooth, steady cut feels better than a jerky one. Therefore keep the shears sharp and well oiled. Explain each step to the patient.
