Description
Sellheim Abortion Scoops
The Sellheim scoop measures 28 cm and helps clinicians clear retained products of conception from the uterus. It gives obstetric and gynecology teams a compact option for evacuation.
Purpose
After miscarriage or delivery, fragments sometimes stay behind in the uterus. Then a clinician may clear them with a scoop or forceps. This pattern offers a scoop-shaped tip that suits that clearing work.
A shorter length
At 28 cm, it sits a little shorter than the 30 cm scoops. So some surgeons find it easier to handle in a small uterus. Also, it fits standard gynecology instrument trays without any overhang at either end.
Working alongside other tools
The scoop rarely works alone. For example, placenta forceps can grasp larger fragments first. Next, the scoop clears what remains along the uterine wall.
Stocking the set
Many units keep a Sellheim scoop with a longer Pestalozza pattern. In that case, the surgeon can choose length to suit the case. However, both serve the same basic purpose.
Reprocessing Sellheim scoop
Rinse tissue from the tip as soon as the procedure ends. Then clean it with a neutral pH detergent and a soft nylon brush. Finally, dry it thoroughly, inspect the rim and send it for sterilization.
