Description
Scoville Nerve Root Retractor
The Scoville nerve root retractor moves a spinal nerve root and the dura aside. Surgeons use it during disc and decompression surgery to protect the nerve.
Protecting the nerve
The nerve root often lies directly over a herniated disc. Therefore the surgeon gently moves it away with the retractor blade. Meanwhile, rongeurs and curettes work on the disc.
Two sizes
We offer a 7 mm blade at 20 cm and an 8 mm blade at 23 cm. The shorter version suits typical lumbar depth. In contrast, the longer version reaches deeper wounds.
During discectomy
After opening the ligamentum flavum, the surgeon identifies the root. Then the retractor draws it medially to reveal the disc. Finally, the surgeon removes the retractor and checks the root.
Picking a size
Consider patient build and how deep you usually work. For example, larger patients may need the 23 cm version. Many teams keep both, since swapping costs only seconds.
Caring for your Scoville nerve root retractor
Rinse the blade after surgery to stop protein from drying on it. Then wash it with a soft sponge and enzymatic or neutral detergent. Dry and sterilize it according to your department’s process.
