Description
Martin Nerve Root Retractor
The Martin nerve root retractor holds a spinal nerve root out of the way. Surgeons use it during discectomy and laminectomy, so they can reach the disc space safely.
Protecting the root
During a disc operation, the nerve root and dura often sit right over the target. Therefore the surgeon or assistant slides the blade in and draws the root medially. Meanwhile, the other hand works with a rongeur or curette.
Size and blade width
We stock the Martin pattern at 20 cm with a 9 mm blade. The length gives reach into a lumbar wound, while the width covers the root without crowding the field. If you prefer a narrower blade, tell us and we will suggest options.
Where it fits in the case
Surgeons usually bring this retractor in after the laminotomy and flavectomy. Then it stays in place while they incise the annulus and remove disc material. Finally, they withdraw it slowly and check the root before closure.
Choosing a root retractor
First, compare the 9 mm blade with your usual approach and patient size. Some surgeons also keep a second pattern in a different width, for example a Scoville. That way, the tray covers both tight and roomy exposures.
Caring for your Martin nerve root retractor
Rinse the retractor straight after use, before protein dries on the blade. Next, clean it with a soft brush and a mild detergent. Dry it well, inspect the blade edge, and sterilize it on your standard cycle.
