A robust shaft

Firm tissue pushes back against a needle. Consequently, a thicker shaft keeps the tip on course. Moreover, that matters with dense pedicles.

Technique

Work the robust curve around the pedicle, keeping the pressure even. Load the thread once the eye clears the tissue.

Schmieden ligature needle for renal work

During nephrectomy, the renal pedicle is short, deep and firm. Also, a robust needle keeps its line through that tissue, and the eye emerges where the surgeon expects it.

During splenectomy, the hilum carries several vessels in a firm bundle. A heavy needle passes around that bundle cleanly, and the same strength helps with thick mesentery during bowel resection.
