Description
Schmid Special Needle
The Schmid special needle carries a suture through tissue on a rigid shaft. Its handle gives control where a free needle would be awkward to hold.
Four sizes, one length
All sizes run 15 cm overall. Besides, the working end steps up a millimetre at a time from 3 mm to 6 mm. Broadly, the bigger ends suit thicker tissue and heavier suture.
When a Schmid special needle helps
Some ties sit deep or behind a structure. A needle holder cannot always reach them. Therefore, a handled needle lets the surgeon pass the thread with one steady hand.
Typical settings
It appears in ENT, gynaecological and general surgery. Surgeons also use it for passing ligatures around pedicles. Furthermore, a set of all four sizes covers most needs.
Handling
Thread the eye before entering the field. Then pass the point with a gentle arc. Afterwards, release the thread and withdraw along the same path.
