Description
Sauerbruch Retractor
The Sauerbruch retractor serves general and thoracic surgeons in open cases of many kinds. It comes in four blade sizes on two instrument lengths.
Smaller blades
The 44 x 16, 55 x 22 and 72 x 19 mm blades sit on a 22.5 cm instrument. So they suit shallow to moderate wound depths. Also, they fit easily in a standard general tray.
Large blade
The 125 x 37 mm blade comes on a longer 25 cm instrument. Because it runs longer, it reaches deep chest or abdominal spaces. Then it holds a broad strip of tissue out of the way.
Thoracic use
Chest surgeons use the large size to hold lung or chest wall tissue. However, general teams tend to use the small sizes more often. Therefore the right stock depends on your case mix.
Choosing sizes
A general tray may need only one small Sauerbruch retractor. Instead, a thoracic tray benefits from the 125 x 37 mm size as well. That way each tray matches the work it supports.
Cleaning Sauerbruch retractor
Scrub both faces of the blade soon after use. Next, rinse the handle and blade in clean water until no residue remains. Finally, dry it fully and keep the large size apart from delicate tools.
