Description
Harrington Retractor
The Harrington retractor, also called a splanchnic retractor, reaches deep into the abdomen and chest. It measures 32 cm and has a heart-shaped blade.
Two widths
The blade measures 127 mm long and comes 40 or 62 mm wide. So the narrow version fits a tight, deep space. Meanwhile, the wide version holds back more tissue at once.
Heart-shaped blade
The heart shape spreads pressure across a broad area of the organ. Then deep structures stay out of the line of work. Because of that, the operating surgeon sees what lies beneath.
Long reach
At 32 cm, it reaches far into the cavity from outside the wound. However, the long lever needs a steady, patient hand. Therefore assistants often brace the arm during long exposures.
Deep cases
Surgeons use a Harrington retractor for upper abdominal and thoracic work. Also, it helps when they need to hold the liver or spleen aside. Plus, both widths fit easily in a deep-case tray.
Care of Harrington retractor
Scrub the blade face and its edges well after each use. Next, rinse the long shaft and check that it stays straight. Finally, dry it and store it in a spot where it cannot bend.
