Rumel-Belmont Tourniquet

The Rumel tourniquet snugs a tape or suture loop around a vessel or cannula to control flow. Cardiac teams also use it to secure purse-string sutures around bypass cannulas.

Six tube diameters

Tubes come in 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.2 and 6.4 mm. So you can fit the bore to the loop you plan to pass through it. Smaller bores suit fine sutures, while the 6.4 mm tube takes wider tape.

Complete set or tube only

You can buy the full 33 cm instrument with its tube in place. Alternatively, order the tube on its own when an old one wears out. That keeps a trusted instrument in service without buying the whole unit again.

How the snare works

First, the surgeon threads the loop ends through the tube. Then sliding the tube down tightens the loop against the tissue. Finally, a clamp on the tube holds that tension until release.

Stocking spare tubes

Tubes see heavy wear, since they rub against suture and tape in every case. Therefore, many departments keep a few spare tubes for each Rumel tourniquet they own. It also helps to stock more than one diameter per tray.

Reprocessing Rumel tourniquet

Flush each tube with water straight after use so no blood dries inside the bore. Next, clean the 33 cm instrument separately and check the tip for wear. Then replace any cracked or stiff tube before the next case.
