Ring Forceps for No Scalpel Vasectomy

One of the two instruments the no scalpel technique is built around. The jaws finish in opposed rings that encircle the vas through the skin and hold it, so the duct is fixed before anything is opened.

Ring diameter

Offered in 3 mm and 4 mm. The ring has to be large enough to take the vas together with the overlying skin, and small enough that surrounding tissue is not gathered up with it. Practitioners generally settle on one size and stay with it, so pick by the technique you were trained in rather than by patient variation.

Why the technique uses it

Fixing the vas extracutaneously means the duct does not have to be chased once the puncture is made. That is what allows the approach to work through a single small opening, and it is why this forceps and the sharp pointed dissecting forceps are usually bought together.

Care

The rings must stay circular and must meet cleanly. Check them closed against the light, and look for any flattening on the inner edge, which will let the vas slip. Brush the ring faces individually, dry the box joint, and store with the ratchet released.
