Richnau Holmgren Ear Specula

Richnau Holmgren ear specula are small funnel-shaped instruments for looking into the ear. Clinicians place one in the outer canal so they can see through to the eardrum.

Role of an ear speculum

The ear canal curves and holds fine hairs that block light. A speculum therefore straightens the path and also keeps hair aside. As a result, light reaches the drum and the clinician can work through the opening.

Three sizes

We offer 2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm openings. The 2 mm size suits very narrow or young ears. The 6 mm size, on the other hand, gives a wider view in adults. The 4 mm size, then, covers many everyday cases in between.

In the clinic and theatre

ENT doctors use metal specula with a headlight, a head mirror or a microscope. For instance, they may examine the drum, remove wax or pass fine instruments through the speculum. Many teams also keep several sizes on a tray, so one is always ready.

Choosing a size

First, pick the largest speculum that fits comfortably, because a bigger opening gives more light and room. However, forcing a large speculum causes discomfort, so size down when in doubt. Ordering all three covers most patients.

Wash each speculum after use, both inside and out. Then dry them fully so no water spots form in the funnel. Finally, sterilize the three sizes together in a tray.
