Description
Richardson Retractor
The Richardson retractor pulls back the abdominal wall with a firm right-angle blade. It measures 24 cm and suits both shallow and deeper openings.
Blade sizes
The small blade measures 28 x 20 mm and the medium 36 x 28 mm. A 32 x 29 mm blade sits between them, with a wider face for its depth. By contrast, the large blade measures 44 x 38 mm and suits a deep wall. So each size lines up with a different incision depth.
Right-angle design
A square bend lets the blade hook neatly under the wound edge. Then the assistant pulls upward and outward with a steady grip. Also, the angle keeps that hand out of the surgeon’s line of sight.
Where teams use it
Abdominal cases make up most of its work in a typical hospital. However, it also holds deep tissue in other open procedures. Therefore many general trays carry two or three of the four sizes.
Choosing a size
Pick the small Richardson retractor for thin patients or short incisions. Instead, the large size grips a thick wall in a bigger opening. Plus, the medium blade covers the middle ground.
Cleaning Richardson retractor
Rinse the corner of the blade, since blood gathers in the bend. Then brush along the shaft and rinse again. Finally, inspect the blade for bends and dry it before sterilizing.
