Description
Reverdin Retractor
The Reverdin retractor is a double-ended hand-held abdominal retractor, 29 cm long. One end measures 45 mm and the other 60 mm.
Two ends, two widths
The 45 mm end suits a narrower wound or smaller structures. By contrast, the 60 mm end holds back a wider area of the abdominal wall. So you can flip the tool instead of reaching for another.
Abdominal use
Surgeons use it to hold back the abdominal wall or organs during open surgery. Also, its 29 cm length gives reach into a deep wound. Therefore, the assistant can keep hands clear of the field.
Working with an assistant
As a hand-held tool, it needs an assistant to hold it. However, that lets the team change the angle at any moment. Then the surgeon can ask for more or less pull as the case moves on.
Pairing
Many teams keep a Reverdin retractor alongside a malleable blade for tight spots. Plus, a frame can hold the wound while the Reverdin works deeper. So the set covers both fixed and hand-held retraction.
Care of Reverdin retractor
Rinse both ends after the case, since each one meets tissue. Next, scrub each blade face and edge with a nylon brush. Finally, dry it and store it where the ends will not strike other tools.
