Description
Reverdin Needle
A Reverdin needle is a handled suture needle with an eye that opens and closes. It lets you pass a ligature through tissue without threading a loose needle.
How the eye works
First, you pass the closed needle through the tissue. Then a thumb lever on the handle slides the eye open, and you lay the ligature in. Finally, you close the eye and draw the thread back through.
Four figures
Fig. 1 to 4 differ in the curve and direction of the needle. So you can choose the shape that meets your site at the right angle.
Not a needle holder
A Reverdin needle does not grip a separate needle. Instead, the needle and handle form one piece, with the eye at the tip.
Where it fits
Surgeons use a Reverdin needle to pass ligatures around vessels or through deep tissue. Also, it suits closures where a free needle would be hard to control. Because the thread loads at the tip, you avoid blind threading in a narrow space.
Cleaning Reverdin needle
Open the eye fully before you clean it. Next, brush the slide and lever to clear any tissue. Then dry the needle, oil the slide lightly, and close the eye for storage.
