The Mayo-Hegar needle holder is the everyday workhorse of general surgery. It pairs ring handles and a ratchet with firmly serrated jaws.

Stainless or tungsten carbide

Plain stainless jaws carry a firm serration that suits most sutures. Alternatively, tungsten carbide inserts add a harder grip surface, and gold handles mark that version.

Standard or delicate pattern

The standard pattern has broad jaws for heavier needles. Instead, the delicate Mayo-Hegar needle holder slims the jaws, so finer needles sit with more precision.

Seven lengths

Short sizes suit skin closure and minor procedures. Then the 24, 26 and 30 cm sizes reach down into the abdomen and pelvis. Also, the 20 cm size bridges general and deep work.

Where it fits

Most general trays hold at least one Mayo-Hegar needle holder in the 16 or 18 cm size. Also, a longer pair often sits on laparotomy and gynecology sets. Because the ratchet locks the needle, you can hand it across without losing your grip.

Care of Mayo-Hegar needle holder

Open the ratchet before cleaning so water reaches the box joint. Next, scrub the serrations with a soft brush and rinse well. Then oil the joint lightly and dry the holder before sterilization.
