Description
Retrobulbar Eye Cannula
The retrobulbar eye cannula helps deliver local anesthesia near the back of the eye. It fits onto a syringe in the usual way. We offer two sizes: 0.60×40.0mm and 0.60×60.0mm.
Reading the size
The first number gives the outer width, 0.60mm. The second gives the length, either 40.0mm or 60.0mm. So both cannulas share the same slim gauge. Only the reach changes. Also, both sizes share the same handling and cleaning steps, so staff need learn only one routine.
Why local blocks matter
Many eye operations run under local anesthesia. Then the patient stays awake but feels no pain, and the eye stays still. A cannula places the drug in the right space. However, each unit follows its own trained method for this step.
Choosing a length
Length decides how far the tip reaches.
- 40.0mm: a shorter reach.
- 60.0mm: a longer reach.
- Always follow your unit’s protocol when you choose.
Handling with care
A slim cannula bends if it meets bone or if you apply side force. So guide it gently and keep it in line. Also, check that the tip stays smooth and straight before each use.
Cleaning the lumen
Flush the lumen with clean water as soon as the case ends. Next, clear it with air to remove the last drops. Then dry it and check for free flow. A partly blocked lumen can change the dose you deliver.
How to order a retrobulbar cannula
Retrobulbar cannulas ship non-sterile, and they can serve again once cleaned and sterilized. Both sizes include three years against manufacturing defects, so a build fault is ours to fix. Retrobulbar cannula steel meets ASTM F899. For a different cannula, see the Scheie eye cannula. Browse our eye instrument store or our questions and answers page.
