Description
Scheie Eye Cannula
The Scheie eye cannula is a fine tube that fits onto a syringe for fluid work during eye surgery. Two sizes give you a choice of width and length. They are 1.0×28.0mm and 1.5×33.0mm.
What the two sizes mean
The first figure gives the width and the second gives the length. So the 1.0×28.0mm cannula is narrower and shorter. The 1.5×33.0mm one, by contrast, is wider and longer. As a result, it moves more fluid with each push.
Where it helps
Surgeons may use a cannula like this to rinse the front of the eye. It can also help clear material during anterior segment work. Then again, every unit has its own method. So use it as your surgeon directs.
Picking a size
Think about flow and reach.
- 1.0×28.0mm: finer flow and a shorter reach.
- 1.5×33.0mm: more flow and a longer reach.
- Both: useful if your cases vary.
Fitting and use
Fit the hub firmly onto the syringe before use. Next, test the flow with a little saline. Then guide the tip gently into place. Also, keep the tip in view during each step.
After surgery
Flush the bore with clean water at once, before fluid dries. After that, push air through to clear it. Dry the outside and check the hub for wear or cracks. Then store the cannula straight, since a bent shaft can kink the flow.
