Description
Presbyterian Tubing Clamp
The Presbyterian tubing clamp closes flexible tubing such as drains, catheters and bypass lines. Its smooth jaws squeeze the tube shut without cutting or tearing it.
Smooth jaws
Toothed clamps can puncture plastic tubing. By contrast, the smooth jaws of the Presbyterian tubing clamp spread pressure evenly across the tube wall.
Size and grip
At 16.5 cm, the clamp gives a firm, comfortable grip. In addition, the ratchet holds the jaws closed, so nobody has to squeeze it while it sits on a line.
Typical uses
Cardiac theatres clamp bypass lines with it during perfusion. Meanwhile, wards and theatres use it to close drains and catheters for short periods.
Technique
Place the jaws across the tube at a right angle. Then close to the ratchet step that stops flow, and check for leaks before letting go.
Clamping safely
Always note where and when a tube was clamped. Afterwards, release the clamp as soon as it is no longer needed, since a forgotten clamp can block drainage.
Why the Presbyterian tubing clamp suits bypass work
Perfusion lines are thick and under pressure. Therefore, a longer clamp with smooth jaws gives the leverage needed without damaging the tubing.
