Description
Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder
The Olsen-Hegar needle holder has scissors built in just behind the jaws. So one instrument holds the needle and cuts the suture.
Built-in scissors
The blades sit proximal to the gripping surface. Then you open the handles a little wider to cut after tying. As a result, the Olsen-Hegar needle holder saves a hand-off to an assistant.
Ratchet lock
Unlike some combined holders, this one keeps a ratchet. As a result, the needle stays locked while you pass it. So you can tie with the needle clamped firmly.
Stainless or carbide
Plain stainless jaws suit general use. However, carbide inserts extend the grip life for busy clinics. Gold handles show which version carries carbide.
Choosing a length
Six sizes run from 14 to 19 cm. For example, 14 or 15 cm suits clinic skin closure. Meanwhile, 18 or 19 cm helps in deeper wounds. Veterinary and dental teams also like an Olsen-Hegar needle holder for solo work.
Reprocessing Olsen-Hegar needle holder
Take care not to nick the scissor edges during cleaning. Next, brush both the jaws and the blades gently. Also, check the cutting action on a piece of gauze once dry.
