Description
Obwegeser Septonasal Osteotome
The Obwegeser septonasal osteotome is a narrow bone chisel for the nasal septum. Surgeons use it during Le Fort I osteotomy to separate the septum from the maxilla.
Why a septal osteotome
The maxilla cannot move freely until the septum lets go. Therefore the surgeon drives this osteotome along the nasal floor with a mallet. The narrow blade then releases the septal attachment.
Lengths and blade widths
We offer three lengths: 15 cm, 18.5 cm and 23.5 cm. Each length comes with a 2.5 mm, 4 mm or 6.5 mm blade. As a result, you can choose from nine combinations.
Its place in orthognathic surgery
This osteotome joins elevators, retractors and other chisels in an orthognathic tray. For instance, a ramus retractor protects soft tissue while the bone cuts proceed. The septal cut then completes the maxillary release.
Choosing a combination
First, pick a length that reaches comfortably from the incision to the target. Next, match the blade width to the thickness of bone you expect. Many surgeons keep two widths so they can switch mid-case.
Caring for your Obwegeser septonasal osteotome
Rinse the blade and shaft right after surgery. Then scrub the edge gently with a soft brush and inspect it for nicks. Finally, dry the osteotome and park it in a slot that shields the edge.
