Description
Nager Ligature Needle
The Nager ligature needle helps ENT surgeons tie bleeding points in the tonsil bed and pharynx. Its long shaft passes through the open mouth while the tip works deep in the throat.
Built for the throat
The tonsil bed sits at the back of the mouth, behind the tongue. Therefore, a 24 cm shaft reaches it while the hand stays outside the gag.
Length of the Nager ligature needle
Twenty-four centimetres suits adult throats well. In addition, the slim tip leaves room for suction beside it.
Typical procedure
After tonsillectomy, small vessels may bleed in the tonsil bed. Passing the needle around that point lets a ligature seal it.
Technique
Hold the needle like a pen for fine control. Then pass the tip under the bleeding vessel, thread the eye and draw back.
On the ENT tray
Hurd and Claus needles serve similar tasks with different curves. In addition, many ENT trays carry two patterns.
Why a dedicated ENT needle
General ligature needles are often too thick for the tonsil bed. A slimmer ENT pattern, by comparison, keeps the view open and lets the surgeon see the bleeding point while tying.
