Description
Wien Loop Twister, Modified
The Wien loop twister tightens wire loops in deeper fields. This modified pattern measures 23.5 cm, so it reaches wires that sit well below the skin.
Extra reach
The longer shaft keeps the hand clear of the wound. Consequently, the surgeon can twist wires deep in the chest or around a long bone.
What the modification brings
The jaws hold the two wire ends firmly side by side. As a result, the twist forms evenly instead of wrapping one wire around the other.
Typical uses of the Wien loop twister
Sternal closure after heart surgery often uses wire loops. In addition, orthopaedic cerclage around long bones needs the same firm twist.
Technique
Grip both wire ends close to the tissue. Then rotate steadily while keeping gentle upward tension. Stop once the loop sits snugly.
Short or long twister
The Friedrich pattern suits shallow work. By contrast, the Wien reaches deep wires more comfortably. Moreover, many trays carry both.
Wire gauge
Thicker wire needs more turning force, whereas thin wire twists easily but breaks sooner. In practice, the long handles of this pattern give enough leverage for the heavier gauges used in sternal closure.

Before you order
Our modified Wien twister carries three years against manufacturing defects. Long reach, same cover. Someone at our Atlanta base goes over each twister by eye ahead of shipping. A spare twister in the sterile store saves a cancelled case. It pairs well with our Friedrich loop twister. View the rest of our general instruments catalog for extra options. For more on instrument metals, review ASTM F899. The order FAQ addresses shipping and refunds.
Licensed buyers only. Our care guidance notes photo differences along with nickel in the steel. Visit our shipping terms for dispatch times.
