Description
McDonald Elevator
The McDonald elevator is a slim dissector for neurosurgery and spine work. Surgeons use it to lift dura or soft tissue away from bone before cutting.
A fine lifting tool
Many surgeons also call this pattern a McDonald dissector. Its slim working end slips between tissue layers without much force. Therefore it suits delicate steps near the dura and nerve roots.
One length
We stock the elevator at 18 cm. This length gives good control in cranial work and in shallow spinal wounds. For exact tip dimensions, please contact us and we will measure a piece for you.
Typical steps where it helps
Before a rongeur bites the lamina, the surgeon often frees the dura underneath. Similarly, around a burr hole, the elevator separates dura from the inner table. It also helps to clear ligament from bone edges.
How to choose
If you already own Penfield dissectors, this pattern adds a different profile to the tray. Surgeons who work in tight spaces often like having both. In short, pick the tool that matches your hand and the step you do most.
Caring for your McDonald elevator
Wipe the tip clean during the case whenever blood builds up. After surgery, wash it with a soft brush and mild detergent. Then rinse, dry fully and sterilize it on your normal cycle.

Ordering the McDonald elevator
We offer a three-year warranty on this elevator for any defect in workmanship. It passes a hand inspection at our Atlanta base before we send it. See our common questions page for help with orders. Also, ASTM F899 is the standard we cite for surgical instrument steel. For a second elevator of the same length, try the Yasargil elevator. Then explore the complete neurosurgery department.
Only for professional use. The care and cleaning guide covers how pictures relate to the actual elevator and where nickel fits in the steel. Our return terms cover unused items.
