Mayo- Blake Gall Stone Forceps
The Mayo-Blake stone forceps lift stones out of the gallbladder and bile ducts. They come straight or curved, so the surgeon can choose the best approach.
Straight or curved
The straight version suits stones in line with the opening. By contrast, the curved version reaches around bends. Many trays carry both.
Length of the Mayo-Blake stone forceps
They measure 20 cm. As a result, they handle stones in the gallbladder and upper duct with good control. The handles stay outside the wound.
Jaw design
The jaws close around the stone with even pressure. Meanwhile, their smooth outer surface protects the duct. That suits both hard and soft stones.
Typical procedures
Open cholecystectomy and duct exploration use them. For example, they remove stones from the gallbladder neck. They also lift stones from the cystic duct.
Technique
Approach the stone with the jaws closed. Then open slightly and grasp firmly. Finally, withdraw along the line of the duct.
When to reach for the Mayo-Blake stone forceps
Stones in the gallbladder neck often sit at an angle to the opening. In that situation, the curved version turns the jaws toward the stone, whereas the straight version suits stones lying directly ahead.
