Description

Mayfield Bone Rongeur Forceps

The Mayfield bone rongeur is a forceps that bites away bone in small pieces. Neurosurgeons use it to shape craniotomy edges and to remove bone around the spine.

How a bone rongeur works

The surgeon closes the jaws on a bone edge and then lifts the fragment away. Each bite takes a little bone, so the surgeon controls exactly how much comes off. This makes it useful when nerves or dura lie close by.

Size offered

We list the Mayfield pattern at 18 cm overall. That length handles well in a cranial wound and in a shallow spinal exposure. For deeper work, however, you may prefer a longer rongeur from the same range.

When surgeons pick it up

After a craniotomy, the surgeon often trims sharp edges on the bone flap or window. Surgeons also use it to widen a burr hole or clear bone from the lamina. Meanwhile, suction keeps the field clear of bone dust and blood.

Picking a rongeur

First, think about the depth of your usual approach. Next, compare this length with the rongeurs already in your set. If you need help, send us your current list and we will suggest a match.

Caring for your Mayfield bone rongeur

Open the jaws and flush bone chips out right after surgery. Then clean the box joint area with a soft brush and neutral detergent. Finally, dry it thoroughly, apply instrument lubricant to the joint, and sterilize it.
