Description
Maumenee (Colibri) Fixation Forceps, 1 x 2 Teeth
Surgeons often reach for the Maumenee colibri fixation forceps during wound closure. Its 10 cm handle ends in a 1:2 tooth tip just 0.12 mm fine. So it holds a corneal or limbal edge steady while each suture goes in.
A closure forceps at heart
During closure, one hand drives the needle and the other holds the edge. This forceps fills the second role. Also, its fine teeth leave only a tiny mark on the tissue.
How to hold it
Rest the handle across the web of the thumb. Then steer the tip with your index finger and thumb. Because the tip sits at an angle, your fingers stay below the view, and you see the wound clearly.

Both patterns run 10 cm with 0.12 mm teeth. However, small differences in handle shape change how they feel. So try both if you can, and pick the one that rests better in your hand.
- 10 cm handle
- Tip angled in the Colibri style
- Fine 1:2 teeth (0.12 mm)
- Holds wound edges during suturing
Tissue it suits
It works well on cornea, limbus and sclera. Meanwhile, for loose conjunctiva, a plain or broader forceps may hold better. In practice, many trays carry a Colibri forceps plus a plain one.
Keeping the Maumenee precise
First, rinse the tip right after the case. Next, clean it gently in an ultrasonic bath. Finally, check the teeth under magnification and store the forceps in a guard.
