Description
Martin Uterine Sound
The Martin uterine sound measures the depth of the uterine cavity. It comes in rigid or malleable form, 30 cm long, with graduations.
Rigid or malleable
The rigid version holds its line for a straightforward canal. By contrast, the malleable version bends to follow the canal. So pick malleable when the uterus sits at a sharp angle.
Graduated markings
Markings along the sound show the depth once the tip meets the fundus. Then the clinician notes the reading before the next step. Also, the measurement guides how far to pass a curette or dilator.
A 30 cm reach
At 30 cm, this sound runs longer than many alternatives. Therefore, it suits a deep field or a large uterus. Meanwhile, the hand stays well outside the speculum.
Shaping the malleable version
Bend the malleable version gently by hand to match the expected curve. However, avoid repeated sharp bends in one spot. The rigid Martin uterine sound needs no shaping at all.
Care of Martin uterine sound
Clean the sound along its full length, including the graduated section. Next, rinse and dry it fully before you package it for sterilizing. Store the malleable model straight or in its last shape, never crushed under other tools.
