The Martin-Langenbeck raspatory is a periosteal stripping instrument with a broad blade. It frees periosteum and muscle attachments from bone before cutting or fixation.

A classic combination

Bernhard von Langenbeck designed many retractors and elevators still in use. This version adds changes linked to the Martin name. As a result, it has a solid blade with a slightly rounded working edge.

Two blade widths

Pick 12 mm or 16 mm. The 12 mm blade fits narrower bones and tighter spaces. Meanwhile, the 16 mm blade clears broader surfaces faster.

Where the Martin-Langenbeck raspatory works

Trauma and orthopedic surgeons use it on the femur, tibia and humerus. It also suits the iliac crest during graft harvest. In addition, plastic surgeons use it during bone contouring.

Getting under the periosteum

Begin at an incision in the periosteum. Then tilt the blade so the edge rides on bone, not on the membrane. That way the layer lifts cleanly and stays intact for closure.

Matching width to bone

Use the 12 mm blade on the forearm and fibula. In contrast, the 16 mm blade suits the femur and tibia shaft. Consequently, a pair covers most long-bone exposures.

Edge care

Wipe the blade clean during the case if tissue builds up. Once the case ends, launder and dry the instrument. A dull blade tears the periosteum, so have it honed when needed.
