Description
Magill Catheter Introducing Forceps
A forceps with a double angled shank and jaws that curve back on themselves, designed so the hand and the handles sit well clear of the line of sight while the tips work at depth. It is used to take a catheter or tube tip and direct it under vision.
The offset
The shank steps twice, carrying the handles up and to the side. Without that offset the operator hand would sit exactly where the view is needed. Everything else about the instrument follows from it, including the way the jaws are angled so their faces stay parallel at the working depth.
Jaws
Ringed and lightly serrated, shaped to cradle a round tube rather than flatten it. They hold a catheter firmly enough to steer it without closing hard enough to kink it, which is the balance the pattern is known for.
Three sizes
Adult, child and infant. The sizes differ in overall length and in jaw aperture, so pick by the tube caliber being handled rather than by patient size alone.
Care
Brush the inside of the jaw rings, which is where debris sits. Check the offset for any spring, since a shank that has been levered will no longer hold the jaws parallel. Dry the joint and store open.
