Luc Nasal Septum Compression Forceps

The Luc nasal septum compression forceps squeezes a bent septum back toward the midline. Surgeons use it when parts of the septum need reshaping rather than removal.

Reshaping without removal

Keeping septal tissue helps preserve nasal support. Therefore surgeons often try compression before they cut. The jaws press on both sides of the septum and flatten the curve.

When surgeons use it

Compression usually follows mucosal elevation during septoplasty. Next, the surgeon checks the result with a speculum. If a spur remains, cutting forceps then finish the work.

Comparing compression patterns

Several compression forceps exist, such as the Craig-Dominick, Knight and Struycken. Each surgeon tends to prefer one, often the pattern they learned with. So if your team already uses a Luc, this keeps the set consistent. Otherwise, a trial of two patterns can settle the question.

Caring for compression forceps

Rinse the jaws after each case to remove mucus and blood. Then brush the joint while the jaws are open. Also dry it fully before sterilization. Finally, store it where heavier instruments cannot press on the jaws.
