Description
Lovelace Tissue and Organ Holding Forceps
Lovelace forceps grasp and hold lung and other organ tissue during thoracic surgery. The single 20 cm length gives reach into the chest.
Holding lung tissue
Lung tissue feels soft and tears with little force. So a holding instrument needs to grip without heavy pressure. Also, surgeons use it to lift or draw back a lobe while they work.
One length for the chest
At 20 cm, it reaches well into a typical thoracotomy. Therefore, the surgeon’s hand stays outside the rib spreader. Then the view of the target area stays clear for the whole team.
Other organ work
Beyond the lung, teams may use it on other soft organ tissue. For example, it can help steady tissue while another instrument works nearby. However, always match grip strength to the tissue involved.
Pairing with other thoracic tools
Thoracic trays often hold Lovelace forceps next to lung retractors and bronchus clamps. That way, each step has the right tool ready. Plus, a second pair helps when two areas need holding at the same time.
Cleaning Lovelace forceps
Clean the jaws thoroughly, since lung tissue can cling to them. Next, flush the hinge with water and dry the instrument fully before inspection. Store it flat so the long shafts stay straight and the tips keep meeting evenly.
