Description
Littauer Ligature Scissors
The Littauer stitch scissors are a slightly longer hooked pattern for suture removal. Thanks to the rounded hook, each stitch rises off the skin before the upper blade cuts it.
The hook
The rounded hook slides under the stitch without catching the skin. As a result, removal feels comfortable for the patient.
Length of the Littauer stitch scissors
At 14 cm, they are slightly longer than many stitch scissors. Therefore, they reach stitches in creases and awkward places.
Typical uses
Community nurses and wound clinics rely on them for routine removals. Occasionally, theatre staff borrow them to trim suture tails.
Removal technique
Lift the knot with forceps, then slide the hook under the stitch. Next, cut and pull the suture through.
Littauer or Spencer
Both have hooked blades. However, the Littauer is a little longer, which some staff prefer for limb and trunk wounds.
Clinic stock
Busy clinics often keep several pairs. Consequently, each patient gets a freshly sterilised instrument.
