Description
Lebsche Sternum Chisel, Bone and Rib Shear
The Lebsche sternum chisel opens the chest by splitting the sternum along its length. The surgeon guides the cutting edge and taps it through the bone with a mallet.
How the chisel works
First, the surgeon seats the cutting edge on the midline of the sternum. Then light, even mallet taps drive it through the bone. So the sternum parts along a controlled line.
Two close lengths
We list this chisel in 24.5 cm and 25 cm. Both give similar reach, so match the one already on your sternotomy tray. Also, a second piece lets one stay ready while the other goes through reprocessing.
A manual option
Many centers now open the sternum with a powered saw. However, a manual chisel needs no power source or battery. As a result, some teams keep a Lebsche sternum chisel on hand as a backup.
Using a mallet safely
Strike squarely on the end with a mallet of suitable weight. Also, keep fingers and retractors clear of the line of each blow. Next, look over the cutting edge for nicks before every case.
Cleaning Lebsche sternum chisel
Wipe bone dust and blood from the edge as soon as the case ends. Then scrub the struck end, since mallet blows can leave small dents that trap debris. Finally, fit an edge guard for storage so the cutting line stays true.
