Description
Langenbeck Periosteal Raspatory
The Langenbeck raspatory is a classic periosteal stripping instrument. It comes at 18 cm and 19 cm and clears periosteum ahead of cuts, plates and grafts.
A classic for good reason
The Langenbeck design has a flat blade with a sharp front edge. So it slides under periosteum and pushes it away in one layer. Also, the shape has changed little over the years.
Two close lengths
The 18 cm and 19 cm versions differ only slightly. Therefore personal feel decides most choices. In addition, some surgeons like the extra centimeter for deeper bones.
Who uses the Langenbeck raspatory
Orthopedic and trauma surgeons use it on long bones. Also, plastic surgeons use it during bone contouring. It suits rib work as well.
Technique
Begin at a clean incision in the periosteum. Then push the blade forward with the edge on bone. Lift the freed layer aside for later closure.
Classic tools on modern trays
Even with new instruments available, many surgeons still reach for this pattern. That is because the blade simply works. Consequently, it remains on most bone trays today.
